The Bethesda Chapter of AWIS was
formed in 1991 and has grown to over 150 members.
Its members are actively engaged in scientific
research, education, administration and policy
activities, and are employed in federal agencies,
academia, business, and non-profit organizations.
The Chapter offers many activities and benefits
to its members.
Members receive announcements of the yearly seminar series - "Strategies
for Success in Science" which features:
- speakers
who provide their personal insight and experience
on topics such as: starting your own biotechnology
company, how to negotiate an academic job
offer, and family and career issues.
- a
seminar for an outstanding woman scientist
who has been named by the National Institutes
of Health as the annual Pittman Lecturer,
in honor of Dr. Margaret Pittman, the first
woman laboratory chief at the NIH.
- a
reception, prior to each seminar, that affords
attendees an opportunity to socialize and
network with the speakers, members of the
board, and each other.
- Via
the Chapter Listserv, all members receive
email notices of:
job announcements, meetings, websites, etc. of interest, funding opportunities
mentoring and networking activities, details of our seminar meetings
(seminar announcements also are mailed to members prior to each meeting)
- Members
have the opportunity to:
suggest nominees for the Chapter's annual mentoring award, serve on
the Board, nominate candidates to serve as officers of the Board.
